CHRISTIE TOUSSAINT
MACHANN CHABON-SOLD
24in x 36in-oil on canvas
One of Haiti’s chief source of fuel is wood charcoal. Charcoal production is carried out all over the country but most ends up in Port-au-Prince (the capital) where the demand is greatest. A sack of charcoal can usually cost about from the producer and 1250 Gourdes (12USD) from second vendors. With a growing population of over 10 million, the demand for wood has exponentially increased. Based on most recent research, about 50 million trees are cut each year, causing deforestation and the degradation of the agricultural lands.
Although this painting subtly brings awareness to the market of charcoal production in Haiti, I also wanted to include some vibrant colors and these diamond-like shapes in the background to conclude that we can always take a step to reshape the future of the forestation of our lands.
